Relic Guitars Crafted by Artisan Zach Beatty

Customized guitars are hard to come by these days but The Scarab has them on display for your playing or viewing pleasure. Each guitar is different and each is created by Alaskan resident Zach Beatty of Bar-Z, a musical enthusist who has played the guitar on and off since childhood.

Zach’s process begins with a manufactured, unfinished, blank made of raw wood and then he assembles and designs each guitar.

“My guitars are uniquely assembled and any ‘damage’ I put on the guitar has a reason,” he explained. “There is sensibility to the wear – if you watch a musician you see the wear and tear the guitar endures from playing, setting a guitar down, throwing it around, etc. My designs come from practical observations of how people play and then I apply that to my craft.”

Zach’s creations are each unique in terms of color and design. While one is cherry red and looks brand new, another has intricate wood designs and looks like a relic. The ability to make a wide range of pieces allows the customer to decide if they would like a “distressed” look, something that looks new, or a guitar that has a “used” feel to it.

“When I started this whole thing I didn’t care if a guitar ever sold,” Zach explained. “I just wanted to build and design guitars and thought maybe I’d give them as gifts. Either way it was something that needed to come out of me.”

In the meantime, anyone who would like to see or play these instruments made by Bar-Z can walk right into The Scarab and give them a whirl. They are prominently displayed in the front of the store on the right-hand side.

“I love designing these guitars because it allows me to participate in music vicariously through my creations"  Zach explained.  “It’s quite an experience to assemble a guitar and see it utilized in the musical process. I’m really enjoying it.”
