It’s not easy bringing the Napa Valley to Chicago but interior designer Donna Figg of Donna Figg Design was able to do just that for her clients living in the Midwest. Located in the North Shore area of Chicago, the 2,200 square-foot bottom level of the home was renovated after the architect recommended completely shifting the interior rooms.

The formal living room was eliminated and became an entertainment room, the dining room moved to the front of the house, and the kitchen was expanded to include a breakfast and sitting area.

“The couple needed an interior designer to round out the team,” Figg explains. “I had worked with one of the husband’s business partners on one of their mutual development projects so I was brought onboard.”

Because the clients wanted their décor to resemble Napa Wine Country, Figg focused on clean, simple lines and understated elegance. Additionally, the couple wanted the spaces to be cozy so reclaimed beams, along with integral color plaster, were used throughout the home.

“We softened the kitchen design by adding a curved plaster hood and niches in the stone behind the range,” says Figg. “There was a wonderful mix of materials from the iron stair railing, rich wood floors, dry stacked stone, and plaster. We also designed a simple fireplace in the entertainment room that had a slanted plaster wall above a wood beam mantel and stone fireplace. A pastoral painting is displayed on the mantel.”

Although it was tough for the couple to part with their furnishings at first, Figg notes that once the clients could see their vision becoming a reality, they were excited. She adds, “Their whole home was literally turned inside out!”

Rugs from The Scarab were used in the home, “The rug in the family room really tied all of the colors in the room together and was chosen as a quiet palette,” Figg says. “The runner in the entertainment room was chosen to incorporate all of the warm tones in the room and was used as a passage to the office.”
